British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
