Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative voices to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively subdued after the release, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were given physical folders of files that included no new information.
